From waste to great taste: The future of coffee capsules

At Sjöstrand, we believe coffee should be as kind to the planet as it is to your palate. That’s why we’ve created biodegradable capsules made from coffee waste - no plastic, no aluminum, just innovation rooted in nature. It’s more than a product, it’s a commitment to rethinking how we consume, produce, and preserve.
Why say goodbye to aluminum and plastic?
Traditional coffee capsules rely heavily on materials that leave a lasting environmental footprint:
- Aluminum is energy-intensive to produce, requiring vast resources to smelt and mold.
- Most capsules are only partially recyclable - while aluminum may be reused, the plastics and silicone rings often aren’t.
- Plastic components can persist in nature for centuries, never truly breaking down.
We’ve found a smarter, more circular solution. By upcycling coffee silverskin - a thin layer that naturally peels off during the roasting process - we create a bio-based material for our new capsules.
Silverskin is no ordinary waste. It’s rich in potential, packed with p to 86% soluble dietary fibers.
This once-discarded skin is now the hero of our sustainability story, transformed into compostable, high-performance capsules that match the quality of traditional alternatives - without the environmental cost.
The Circular Coffee Capsule
With our new capsules, your coffee leaves only a minimal trace—as the silverskin from one batch is reborn as the capsule for the next—delivering bold, flavorful coffee in a closed-loop system where nothing goes to waste, because at Sjöstrand, we believe sustainability should be the standard, not the exception.
Compost, the conscious way
To dispose of your capsules in the best possible way, simply toss them in the organic waste bin. There, they’ll make their way to an industrial composting facility, where conditions are just right for nature to do its work. In about 12 weeks, the capsule breaks down and returns to the earth - cleanly and completely.
While home composting is possible, it’s not always easy. Getting the balance just right for microbes to thrive can be tricky. The pros have it down to a science.
And if your capsule ends up in general waste? Even then, it will leave a smaller footprint than conventional alternatives. But for the best outcome, choose the bio-bin.
